Sound and Song for Mums
‘Sound and Song for mums’ are support groups designed to help mums who may be experiencing feelings of stress, anxiety and social isolation.
Our groups provide a fun way to boost mood, unwind and de-stress through the joy of singing. Sessions are led by a specialist singing leader with songs ranging from folk to gospel, in a number of different languages.
Participation is free as it is funded by our CIC contributors. Weekly sessions allow women to connect with each other in a supportive space, establish a structure to their week, and have a positive experience to focus on, all while the little ones soak up the sounds from singing.
We currently have two sound and song for mums groups running, one in Burnham and one in High Wycombe.
Maternal Wellbeing
At our singing groups mums are the centre of attention. We believe a healthy and happy mum makes a healthy and happy baby (and family).
“Group singing with other mums is associated with greater decreases in the stress hormone cortisol than any other social interactions” -

Frequently asked questions
Am I eligible to join the programme?
The programme is designed for women experiencing low mood, anxiety, stress, social isolation or symptoms of postnatal depression. You can self refer to the group if you think this is for you. Some women will be referred by local health practitioners.
What format are the sessions?
The sessions take place weekly led by a specialist member of our team. They are an hour and a half in length, we’ll spend around 60 minutes singing with opportunities to chat and check-in at the end over a cuppa. When you register in advance we’ll get in touch so you know what to expect.
Do I need any experience of singing?
No! You don’t need any singing experience to take part. We’ll slowly introduce very simple songs and melodies with the option to try harmonies once you’ve built your confidence!
Does my baby need to be awake during the sessions?
Not at all, if your baby needs to sleep or feed during the sessions they are very welcome to. The environment is relaxed and informal and focused on the needs of you and your baby.
Who are we?
Sound and Song CIC was founded by Zoe Hatch, a warm and dynamic songstress and facilitator. Zoe is a registered member of the Natural Voice Network and national charity Singing for Health. She's delighted to be leading the ‘Singing Support for Mums’ projects to improve maternal health and well-being.
Our singing groups are for women and mothers to come at one point during their week; to give a little bit back to themselves, to nourish themselves through simple harmony, song and community.
Studies show time and again that babies respond most positively to the unaccompanied female voice over all other music and that singing groups are an effective treatment for women with postnatal depression.
This work is vital for new mothers, to support their mental health and well-being but it benefits all women who want to come and sing with us.
In collaboration with Singing Mamas
Zoe is a registered practitioner with Singing Mamas CIC. Singing Mamas is a UK leader in supporting maternal mental health and wellbeing through singing. Their approach has been developed from the decade of experience of their founder, Kate Valentine, a singer and nurse who specialises in supporting perinatal women through building song-sharing communities. Sound and Song CIC are proud to work closely with Singing Mamas as a sister organisation and to champion their work through our projects.
